i think black sails in the sunset was a rad album, although i think their ballads are really self indulgent. they have some great hardcore riffs, though, and the songwriting is a level above what you find on their first two full-lengths. however, i think the new album is awful- to me, it sounds like the same formula over and over again- verse, chorus with the whole band singing and davey havoc wailing, verse, chorus, annoying and stupid slow part with davey talking or whispering, chorus, end. it's so formulaic it hurts (except for song 7 which rocks), and i always end up taking it out and putting in black sails. i think they did change their sound to become more acceptable- just look at the single they released from that record. i mean, come on- it's so watered down and cheesy (the "everyone was dancing" part almost makes me puke every time i hear it). as far as their changing styles- they've always been kind of dark (look at the video for he who laughs last), but it is odd the 180 they pulled going into they eye-makeup/pumpkin routine. someone mentioned, correctly i feel, that pennywise is like the ac/dc of punk and i think that afi is slowly falling into that role as well. wow, this is so long it's like three or even FOUR cents for all you a-holes who only put in your TWO cents. how's that for @#%$ talking, huh? (sarcasm)
